Tai chi has been popular for years as a meditative workout regimen that provides both physical and mental benefits. This is a VHS tape released in 1993 the provides a tai chi exercise program aimed at senior citizens. “Special exercises that may relieve symptoms, increase your strength and endurance,” it says on the box.

Dear Yogis!

Welcome to Gentle Yoga Vol. 3, our yoga series that is perfect for seniors, beginners or just those looking for a gentle yoga class! I have added a couple of challenging poses to this installment, but if you feel like you are not quite ready to go there I have alternatives.

First, I added “pigeon pose.” If you find this to be challenging, you can do the modified version of the pose which will show up in a box on the right hand corner of your screen. To do the pose simply lie down on your back, cross your right ankle of the left knee, then bring your right hand in between the crossed legs and hold on the back of the left knee with both hands. Then gently pull the knee in toward your face. This is the modified pigeon and is giving you the similar stretch as the original pigeon. When you are done, switch sides.

Second, I added “shoulder stand.” If you find this to be challenging, please go back to the modified “legs up the wall” that we did on the block in Vol. 2. In case you don’t recall, just take your block, place it under the sacrum and then slowly lift the legs into the air. Voila!

In this exercise session, we are going through a great standing cardio routine in 2 phases, the first with simple hand dumbbells and the second just using our body weight.

Cardio routines using with and without weights are a great way to get your body warmed up and moving. The goal is to raise your heart rate just enough so that you get your blood flowing to all areas of your body.

Your upper body; arms, shoulder, upper back, etc and down to your lower body; thighs, hips, calves, and feet, etc.

These areas all benefit from cardio as well as the most important muscle in our body, our heart!

For this workout, you can use lightweight dumbbells or substitute using bottles of water or cans of soup. You can also skip weights altogether and just follow along with your motions.

Either way, your body will still benefit from the range of motion that this exercise takes you through.

Remember to drink lots of water and only do movements that work for you. Never do any movements that may cause you pain or discomfort and remember to take breaks whenever you need to.

Low-Impact Aerobics Workout AND What Is Cardio?

Let’s get sweaty together!!! Some days, a power-walk outside is a no-go… maybe due to weather or maybe you just don’t feel like it. That’s when this aerobics exercise workout will be just the ticket! I kept the steps simple, but still fun and challenging in this 30 minute all-standing cardio workout. You’ll get your heart rate up and burn a whole lotta calories. Since we can’t get to our fitness or SilverSneakers classes right now, this can be a fun at-home alternative for you… no equipment needed!
